40 Advanced Throwing
A review of techniques focussing on good practice and the development of visual awareness.

Throwing. Intermediate and advanced

This course will concentrate on the development of both making techniques and aesthetic visual vocabulary. The introduction to, and practice of different ways of manipulating clay, from throwing to the finishing processes, will expand familiarity with the medium and open new possibilities of self expression
The course is intended as an opportunity for a further development for those who already have some experience with throwing and finishing. For those who wish to focus their time on developing quality and skill in particular directions with thrown form there will be, from the start, a variety of projects from which to choose. The best part of the work will be fired to stoneware temperature. Demonstrations in throwing will include a revision of basic processes, variations on vase form derived from a cylinder, ovoid and spherical forms, bowls, cups and plates, various lids, handles and spouts. Demonstrations with decoration will include: modification of thrown form, modelling and clay additions to form, fluting, faceting and carving, application of slip and various slip DECORATION, application of glaze and various glaze processes.

The total cost of the course is 1900 euros; Single price supplement: 300 Euros.

La MeridianaPietro Elia Maddalena studied ceramics at the West Surrey College of Art & Design in England. After two more years of work at Dartington Workshop, he returned to Italy where in 1980 he established a studio in Certaldo, near Florence. Pietro is the founder and director of the International School of Ceramics LA MERIDIANA located in Tuscany, Italy. Also instructor and maker he says of himself : “ I am totally and continuously interested in the process of making. I see the craft object as a projection of the human spirit and the culture in which it was nurtured. In elaborating concept, material and process, my ultimate goal is the expression of beauty through sophisticated and sensual forms”.

La MeridianaFranco Rampi was born in Domodossola. He started working as a potter in 1981. After an apprenticeship in England and a cycle of studies in Italy he opened his own studio in Tuscany.
He produces both functional objects in small series and one off pieces. He works mainly in stoneware, whilst continuing his research on clays, slips and forms.
he has been teaching for the last 10 years and in recent years has been constantly assisting various course leaders at La Meridiana, developing a wide range of techniques.
