Handbuilding. For all

This workshop will have a special focus on hand building techniques to create forms that cross back and forth from sculptural to functional objects. Containers for flowers and large serving dishes will be explored through this focus.
Led by instructors Donna Polseno and Lisa Ehrich, students will investigate both the wall and the table as sites for their clay pieces. The workshop will focus on traditional coil building methods with local terracotta clay to discover and pursue the overlap of sculptural and functional forms. From containers that hold wild flowers to vessels for Italian cuisine to purely sculptural forms students will create works inspired by their Tuscan environment.
Finishing techniques will include the use of underglazes and low-fire glaze to enhance the natural beauty of the terracotta and provide additional function when needed.
In addition to the studio work, Susan Mollet will be coordinating excursions to regional museums, architectural sites, artists’ studios, and other significant destinations that will expand the Tuscan experience.
