36 Form & Fire
Carol Ann Michaelson www.carolannmichaelson.com
Sept. 6th – 19th 2015

Throwing and hand building, woodfiring. Intermediate and advanced.

Taking a couple of weeks to fully explore an idea or a form you have been contemplating isn’t always possible in your studio, but it is now, in this is a session that is all about your ideas.
I will start each day with a related demonstration that the student can choose to explore or can continue to work on their own ideas, with my support. There will also be group and individual demonstrations and time for group discussions on seeing and learning to analyze your work to help it develop and grow.
We will be firing the wood/soda kiln, so not knowing the local glazes and how they respond will not matter.
Instead we will be exploring the best use of flashing slips, textured glazes on greenware and texturing the raw clay using stamps, incising and altering on the wheel in ways to enhance the surfaces for best results with the wood and soda.
Whether you are an experienced wood firer or brand new to this type of firing, the two chamber wood/soda kiln will be a challenging and exciting finish to the work.
There will be opportunities for growth and exploration regardless of whether you want to hand build or work on the wheel.
We will also look to the beauty of the surroundings, the ancient and the new, to act as inspiration and catalysts. We will take advantage of being in Tuscany and explore the beautiful hillside towns and nearby cities.
And let’s not forget the food and wine tastings that are a part of the wonderful experience.

The total cost of the course cost is 2100 Euro; Single price supplement: 280 Euro.
Spouses are welcome. They are entitled to everything offered by La Meridiana as in the agreement except what pertains workshop and ceramic activities. The cost for a non- clay participant is 1600 Euro.

The workshop fee includes the following:
• Tuition
• All materials and firings
• Lodging in double room; single room on request, add 280 €
• Welcome dinner and welcome breakfast
• A freshly prepared Tuscan Lunch with wine on all working days
• Wine and Gourmet tasting
• Field trips

La MeridianaCarol-Ann Michaelson has been a designer and maker of objects for most of her life, primarily as a potter. She has had the opportunity to connect with ceramic artists from around the world and feels honored to be a part of this wonderful community. She has been fortunate enough to have her work included in books, museums and private collections around the world.
One of her passions is working with potters to help them gain a better understanding of the necessary skills needed to grow as artists. She has had the privilege to teach and mentor for many years.
In addition to her ceramic work, Carol-Ann has been exploring a new material called Precious Metal Clay. She has now developed a full range of work and a following for her one of a kind art jewellery.   Her artist's eye brings beauty and thoughtfulness to each piece.
