39 Screenprint on Clay: The Ship Transferring images with the possibility of superimposing colour.
Maria Geszler-Garzuly
September 23th – 29th 2018

Handbuilding. For all

In this course we will study various print techniques, learning the process of transferring images with the possibility of superimposing drawing. Photos, drawings or notes will be transferred on clay slabs, with which we then will build our objects. The theme will be The Ship, with its metaphorical meanings. The ship has been a sacred object since the time of our remote ancestors and maintains its symbolic power up to today. Ships can carry longings, news and adventure. Even the desire to reach a planet, Venus or March, needs a ship for realization: a space ship.
We will learn to make our own screens in the darkroom, from images and photos that each participant will bring to the course, then transfer the images and build objects using stoneware, porcelain and colored slips. The work will be single fired to 1150°C.
Maria Garzuly is a wonderful artist. In her teaching she combines practical information with a poetic vision of the world. To attend one of her courses becomes an unforgettable experience. She hopes that your ship may reach our port!

The total cost of the course is 1080 euros;
The workshop fee includes the following
Tuition of 6 – 8 hours per day
Studio open 12 hours per day
All materials and firings
Lodging in double room; single room on request, add 150 euros
Welcome dinner and welcome breakfast
A freshly prepared Tuscan Lunch with wine on all working days
Final dinner

La MeridianaMaria Geszler-Garzuly „We are part of the wonderful or dreadful nature that surrounds us - this philosophy of Rousseau inspired me during decades for creation of several art pieces. It is the way I look at the landscape when I make photography, this is the way I touch clay and porcelain, when I take it in my hands. This is how I perceive the wet clay and my silk-screened images, as I organically curve my pictures and build my sculptures. This desire leads to the hills, endless meadows and waters and seashores, to dissolve and to get lost in "nothingness", "infinity".”

Maria Geszler-Garzuly completed her studies at the Academy of Art and Craft in Budapest in 1965. She worked as an industrial designer between 1966-80, setting up her own studio in 1975.
Her award winning work can be found in museums and collections all over the world. Her competent and sparkling teaching style is appreciated by the students of her numerous visiting professorships at universities in Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, England and Scotland.
