SUSAN NEMETH and RICHARD PHETHEAN

The seminar is programmed for February the 14th  and 15th , 2009

The two invited artists are English potters Richard Phethean  and Susanne Nemeth.
Most of the work will be done on the Saturday and will be completed
within the first hours of Sunday afternoon.
On the Friday antecedent the Seminar there will be a wood firing with
the “Bagnano Express” two chambered noborigama. People are welcome to see the happening.
The kiln will be opened on Sunday afternoon.

SUSAN NEMETH

Susan Nemeth is a designer and maker of handmade porcelain vases, bowls and decorative platters. Born in Australia, she trained at Wolverhampton Polytechnic. Her work has been awarded internationally and is mentioned in many publications.
In this seminar Susan will explore colour, pattern and imagery using various techniques of staining and layering slips and porcelains. The decoration will be integral. The technique involves laminating sheets of coloured clays inlaid with hand cut patterns, rolling and stretching the layers to create tiles and simple shapes formed starting from flat sheets of clay with some use of  moulds. Firing and finishing techniques will enhance the pure qualities of the clay with a range of strong, pure colour and soft, matt feel.

RICHARD PHETHEAN

A ceramics graduate of the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, and further trained in the studio's of tutors Colin Pearson and Janice Tchalenko, Richard is an established professional potter whose work has been exhibited throughout the UK and can be found in collections internationally. He is a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association, and is on the Crafts Council of Great Britain's Index of Selected Makers.
After an early interest and exploration on English slipware and graffito techniques, preoccupied with achieving greater depth and texture in the surface he began to evolve a more personal style were brushing layers of colours and slips on the terra cotta. Since a few years he has taken a new direction altogether, taking a long term break from domestic pottery production in order to follow a much more sculptural path with his work .
