Handbuilding with Paperclay. For all
The Chianti landscape is filled with natural materials that have been used to create art for centuries. This course will give you the opportunity for a guided exploration to collect ceramic materials in the countryside around Florence, with discussions of the landscape’s geologic and artistic history. In the studio, we will use very simple hand-building techniques in porcelain paper clay, incorporating the collected materials. Students of all levels are welcome in this small group course. This course will run concurrently with Clive Pates’ Landscape Painting workshop, and will include communal day trips, dinners and wine tastings. A cooking course is also available for non-participating partners.

Virginia Pates digs, invents and uses an ever-changing palette of clays to create her loose, thin and gesturally thrown forms, with an unusual range of glaze colors and surfaces.
With a BFA from Mississippi State University and an MFA from the Centre for Ceramic Studies at the University of Wales in Cardiff, UK, Pates has taught at the Queens Road School of Art in Bristol, England, at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (through Hurricane Katrina), and currently at the Verde Valley Campus of Yavapai College in Clarkdale, Arizona. Pates and her husband Clive, a painter, live and maintain a studio in the artists’ community and ghost town of Jerome, Arizona.
