October 6th - 19th, 2013

Throwing. For all

Tom Radca and Brenda McMahon are bringing their popular American workshop to Italy where they break open unconventional throwing techniques and explore distinctive approaches to saggar firing in this dynamic workshop.

During this 2 weeks, participants will delve into throwing large techniques with Tom Radca that allow potters at any skill level to move beyond their own expectations. Tom's unconventional approach will break open old ideas and introduce participants to new clay concepts, including hand building Tom's signature 'cave plates'. Students will begin to master large forms and loosen up in the process.

Brenda McMahon throws elegant, simple forms and will teach her surface preparation and technique for the eventual saggar firings. Burnishing, terra sigillata and carving will also be covered. Brenda will introduce her signature saggar firing process using tumble stack, individual and pod saggars. Her approach is rooted in the pit-fire idiom where she uses organic materials as her palette, so growth from the Tuscan landscape will be incorporated into each firing. Together Tom & Brenda explore the continuum of beauty, form and surface.

Participants will come out of the workshop with inspiration that will ignite their creative juices for years to come. All skill levels are welcome.

Cost: € 2000
The workshop fee includes:

  • tuition (class is 6/7 hours per day with 12 hours studio time)
