19 Majolica. Mediterranean decors
Saura Vignoli - www.ceramichevignoli.com
May 6th - 12th, 2012

Decoration. For all

Nothing beats majolica when it comes to bright colours and painterly decoration.
This low firing technique allows great expression, using the vessel as a canvas.
In this Majolica workshop Saura will show the creation of patterns through a geometrical process of fascinating simplicity, based on the historical designs of byzantine, Moresque and Roman influence.
Starting form a few points of reference on the turning platter to be decorated, in free had technique, a complex pattern of lines fills quickly the spaces, to create "carpet" or optical three dimensional solutions.
She will expose how historical decorative themes are reinterpreted, leading to completely new motifs in a mutual contamination.
The use of various brushes is essential for good results and will be taught properly.
There will be considerations for using this technique in a contemporary way with reflections about design and use.
There will be some experimentation with full fire reduction.

Cost 860
Includes welcome dinner, lunches, lodging, tuition, all materials and firings

La MeridianaSaura Vignoli has received her Master of Arts in ceramics from the Ceramic Art institute " Gaetano Ballardini" in her hometown Faenza, the most important center for Majolica production in Italy. Together with her sister Ivana she has opened her own workshop in 1976.
In her very personal style she incorporates the elements of the great Renaissance tradition of the majolica of Faenza, stretching out to include elements of the whole Mediterranean basin: Byzantine, Moorish and Spanish and imperial Roman influences.
Her collaboration with clay sculpture artists in creating iridescent ceramic surfaces have led to imaginative figures, and richly decorated works. Saura has taught as a visiting professor in various countries of the Mediterranean.
Her works appear in private and public collections all over the world.
