39 Soda Firing as a creative process
Pietro Maddalena - www.pietro.net
September 22nd - October 5th, 2013

Throwing and handbuilding. Intermediate and advanced

The choice of a particular way of firing can influence dramatically the expressive options of the ceramic artist. In vapour glazing the essential transformation brought about by heat and vapours is seen as part of the creative process. This chemically energetic activity can produce varied and exceptional graduations of colour, texture, pattering and flashing in the clays, slips and glazes.
This course is intended both for beginners and more advanced students.
Our aim is that, within the framework of the course, the distinct needs of different levels of experience will be met through individual and group teaching.
Making demonstrations will include: the throwing and shaping of vertical forms, bowl forms, the making handles and of spouted and lidded forms.
The practical work of the course will be complemented by aesthetical considerations and the showing of contemporary and historical ceramic work.
For those wishing to explore the beauty of Tuscany there will be additional side trips offered.

Cost: € 1600
The workshop fee includes the following:
Tuition (class is 6/7  hours per day with 12 hours studio time)

La MeridianaPietro Elia Maddalena studied ceramics at the West Surrey College of Art & Design in England. After two more years of work at Dartington Workshop, he returned to Italy where in 1980 he established a studio in Certaldo, near Florence. Pietro is the founder and director of the International School of Ceramics LA MERIDIANA located in Tuscany, Italy. Also instructor and maker he says of himself : “ I am totally and continuously interested in the process of making. I see the craft object as a projection of the human spirit and the culture in which it was nurtured. In elaborating concept, material and process, my ultimate goal is the expression of beauty through sophisticated and sensual forms”.
