Throwing and hand building techniques. For all.

Intended for both beginners and intermediate students this course will offer fundamental techniques, both in throwing and hand building for the new lovers of ceramics and an important revision for the ones with some familiarity with clay.
In the first days there will be a series of demonstrations and much personal teaching, while for the rest of the course each person will be free to choose the direction of his or her work within the timetable of firings. All selected work will be fired with a series of raku techniques.
There will be demonstrations on handbuilding techniques.
Demonstrations in throwing will include: basic processes, variations on vase form derived from the cylinder, ovoid and spherical forms, bowls, cups and plates, various lids, handles and spouts.
Decoration techniques will include: modification of thrown form, modeling and clay addition to form, facetting and carving, application of glazes and various glazing processes.

Cost € 1.200  It includes welcome dinner, lunches, lodging, tuition, materials and firings




La MeridianaPietro Elia Maddalena studied ceramics at the West Surrey College of Art & Design in England. After two more years of work at Dartington Workshop, he returned to Italy where in 1980 he established a studio in Certaldo, near Florence. Pietro is the founder and director of the International School of Ceramics LA MERIDIANA located in Tuscany, Italy. Also instructor and maker he says of himself : “ I am totally and continuously interested in the process of making. I see the craft object as a projection of the human spirit and the culture in which it was nurtured. In elaborating concept, material and process, my ultimate goal is the expression of beauty through sophisticated and sensual forms”.
