Master class

This course, which is intended for those with previous experience of throwing, has two aims: firstly, to enable participants to develop and refine their skill in throwing; and, secondly,
to introduce participants to the possibilities of gas and wood-fired stoneware.

In the first part of the course each day will commence with demonstrations to the group by the course tutors and participants will then work individually, assisted in turn by the tutors. In their personal work participants may choose either to pursue work relating to the day’s demonstration or to focus on thrown projects of their own. Demonstrations will cover the breadth of thrown: single piece, forms, on both small and larger scale, and the ways thrown form may be modified by turning. Further demonstrations will cover two and multi-piece throwing to produce large or extreme forms; handle pulling and attachment; faceting; fluting; incising; and modification of thrown form at soft and leather hard stages.

In the second part of the course, following glazing demonstrations, work from the first part will be glazed and fired both in the conventional gas fired reduction kilns and in the large two-chamber wood fired kiln (known as the Bagnano Express!).

In addition to the practical work of the course there will be three illustrated talks: two, in the first part of the course, on the visual qualities of pottery, particularly thrown pottery; and one, in the second part, on the design and use of the wood-fired kiln.

Cost € 1.550
It includes welcome dinner, lunches, lodging, tuition, materials and firings.

John Colbeck has taught full and part time at Ceramics degree courses in the UK throughout his working life and was for many years Head of Ceramics at Bath Academy of Art and, in addition, has taught many short courses and given lectures and seminars in the UK and abroad. He is author of “Pottery, the Technique of Throwing” (1969), “Pottery, Techniques of Decoration” (1983) (both of these still available as Classic reprints from Axner Supplies USA) and “Pottery Materials” (1988). He produces unglazed, polished thrown forms in stoneware and porcelain.

La MeridianaPietro Elia Maddalena studied ceramics at the West Surrey College of Art & Design in England. After two more years of work at Dartington Workshop, he returned to Italy where in 1980 he established a studio in Certaldo, near Florence. Pietro is the founder and director of the International School of Ceramics LA MERIDIANA located in Tuscany, Italy. Also instructor and maker he says of himself : “ I am totally and continuously interested in the process of making. I see the craft object as a projection of the human spirit and the culture in which it was nurtured. In elaborating concept, material and process, my ultimate goal is the expression of beauty through sophisticated and sensual forms”.
