Pietro Maddalena - www.pietro.net
April 28th - May 4th, 2013

Raku. For all

In the last 50 years raku firing techniques have developed enormously offering a wide range of surface possibilities. In this workshop we'll explore the aesthetic possibilities of colored glazes and of smoke effects on different colored clay bodies. Work will be mainly directed toward the making of panels and flat ware with the use of moulds. Glazing, decorating, firing of glazes and smoke painting will be done on the two last days.
The variety of projects and firing processes explored during this course by a numerous group will result in a strong experience and inspiration for the future work of participants
As will be Tuscany in the spring with its wines and food!

Cost: € 880
The workshop fee includes:

  • tuition (class is 6/7 hours per day with 12 hours studio time)
  • materials and firings
  • lodging in double room; single room on request at extra cost of € 125
  • welcome dinner
  • welcome breakfast

La MeridianaPietro Elia Maddalena studied ceramics at the West Surrey College of Art & Design in England. After two more years of work at Dartington Workshop, he returned to Italy where in 1980 he established a studio in Certaldo, near Florence. Pietro is the founder and director of the International School of Ceramics LA MERIDIANA located in Tuscany, Italy. Also instructor and maker he says of himself : “ I am totally and continuously interested in the process of making. I see the craft object as a projection of the human spirit and the culture in which it was nurtured. In elaborating concept, material and process, my ultimate goal is the expression of beauty through sophisticated and sensual forms”.
