Throwing, handbuilding, Art History. For all

Enjoy the delights of Tuscany, both artistic and historic, with Paula Smith, Ceramic Sculptor and Laura Rinaldi Dufresne, Art Historian, for a two week sojourn in May of 2013.
Our home base will be La Meridiana, studio and farmhouse complex within close proximity to the many delights of this beautiful region of Italy. Together, like the ancient Etruscans occupying this area two thousand years ago, we will explore their beloved medium of clay, responding to the region's architecture, della Robbia medallions, Etruscan pottery, hilly landscape, rich culture, and the regalia of Italian food under Professor Smith's tutelage. Ms. Smith will mentor students both novice and advanced, to find their own, unique artistic voice through this traditional medium using wheel and hand building techniques.
Our tactile experience will be supplemented by lectures and day trips to the striped cathedrals of Sienna, the thirteen towers of San Gimignano, and the glories of Renaissance art in Florence, led by art historian Professor Dufresne. These artistic and intellectual activities will be augmented by the enjoyment of regional cuisine, wine tasting and the general comradery among those who love Italy, its past, its people, its customs.
Join us for the experience of a lifetime.
