July 15th - 21st, 2012
Handbuilding. Intermediate and advanced
We will experiment with saggar firing in combination with terra sigillata and the use of sulphates as colorants.
During this workshop we will explore different possibilities of saggar firing and some other alternative smoke firing techniques. We will be focussing on wall-pieces and tiles in order to be able to experiment as much as possible and to work efficiently.
We will work on the following questions:
- What is the difference between saggar firing with combustibles and other smoke firing techniques?
- Which clays can be used? Which differences will be obtained with different kinds of clays?
- What is the difference between burnished and unburnished pieces?
- Which temperatures do you fire a saggar kiln?
- What kind of saggars can you use? How can you build your own saggar?
- Which colorants can be used in a saggar?
- What kind of combustibles can be used?
- How can we create special effects?
Participants can bring a few small, bisque fired pieces and/or tiles in different clays.
The workshop is taught in English and translated in Italian.
Cost: € 860
Includes tuition, materials and firings, lodging and lunches
