27 Crystalline glazes on porcelain
Instructor: Luca Tripaldi
Type: Throwing and/or handbuilding. For all
Date: July 4 - 10
Crystalline glazes have a magical quality. Chemistry and nature can offer fascinating effects when the slightest movement causes light to dance across the surface of the crystals, revealing layered depths of colour and texture that bond together in a constantly changing rhythm.
Lovers of wheel throwing will address the complexities of throwing with porcelain, focusing on all aspects of throwing, but also on obtaining a smooth surface functional for glazing with crystals.
Those who choose hand building will be encouraged to find original solutions to enhance the potential of this particular glaze and simultaneously solve the specific problems that arise. We will pay particular attention to the chemistry of crystals with the execution of several tests before the final glazing. The challenge and fascination of this technique is to recreate the process of crystallisation that in nature can take thousands of years. This course requires much precision and care during every step, for this reason it is recommended to specify skill level when registering.
Cost: € 860
Includes tuition, materials and firings, lodging and lunches
Luca Tripaldi was born in Turin in 1969. Graduated on graphic art before working on sculpture and then been taken by ceramics until he opened a workshop in Turin in 1999. He has been particularly interested on the development of smoke firing techniques and fascinated by the qualities of the surfaces that these processes can offer. In recent years he had a strong interest in studying and developing crystals glazes and carbon trapping. He is sharing a studio in London and has been invited to teach at prestigious ceramic schools in the USA.
