18a Paperclay with porcelain.
Instructor: Luca Tripaldi
Type: Hand building. For all
Date: April 26 – May 2, 2009

A porcelain workshop where we explore the potential of this versatile but somehow difficult clay. The addition of cellulose will make it more ductile and flexible and suitable for the realization of functional or abstract object.
Paperclay is innovative and can be worked to the finest thinness with complex texture and structure. It differs from all other clay for its potential transparency, brightness and hardness. The fact that it doesn’t need glazing makes it particularly appropriate for sculpture, abstract form and musical objects. Much attention will be given to the study and choice of surface textures. Each student, after selecting a variety of textures, will make his own negative plaster moulds from which clay slabs will be taken. A series of immages and research assignement will be accompanied by demonstrations and personal tuition.

Cost 850 € (Includes tuition, lodging, lunches, materials and firings)

La MeridianaLuca Tripaldi was born in Turin in 1969. Graduated on graphic art before working on sculpture and then been taken by ceramics until he opened a workshop in Turin in 1999. He has been particularly interested on the development of smoke firing techniques and fascinated by the qualities of the surfaces that these processes can offer. In recent years he had a strong interest in studying and developing crystals glazes and carbon trapping. He is sharing a studio in London and has been invited to teach at prestigious ceramic schools in the USA.
