15 Smoke firing through Easter
Instructor: Luca Tripaldi
Type: Handbuilding and throwing. For all
Date: April 7 - 13, 2009
During this Easter workshop we discover, learn and develop smoking firing skills. On the surface of the naked, previously smoothened clay, the sawdust and wood used as a fuel will allow us to obtain smoky effects of marmorisation and craquelè which recall the surfaces of natural stone. With the help of thermal shock resistant engobes we will create designs and geometric effects. The firing techniques include pit firing both with firewood and with sawdust. Participants will be able to repeat this firing at home in any open space, without the need of kilns. We’ll be using hand building techniques but expert throwers will have access to the wheelsmay work on the wheel.
Cost 850 € (Includes tuition, lodging, lunches, materials and firings)
Luca Tripaldi was born in Turin in 1969. Graduated on graphic art before working on sculpture and then been taken by ceramics until he opened a workshop in Turin in 1999. He has been particularly interested on the development of smoke firing techniques and fascinated by the qualities of the surfaces that these processes can offer. In recent years he had a strong interest in studying and developing crystals glazes and carbon trapping. He is sharing a studio in London and has been invited to teach at prestigious ceramic schools in the USA.
