33 A Connections: Form – Glaze - Firing
John Colbeck
August 17th – 30th 2014

Throwing. Beginners and advanced

People throw, and always have, for a variety of reasons. Some focus on form and its surface; some concentrate on objects of function; others use thrown objects as a three dimensional support for graphic ideas – and these three interests often merge.  The central focus of this course is throwing but a related focus is on the range of ways objects may be finished. Our aim is that, within the framework of the course, the distinct needs of different levels of experience will be met through individual and group teaching.
Each working day will commence with demonstrations to the group. Students may then work in relation to those demonstrations or may pursue their individual intentions, in both cases with the attention and support of the teacher. Making demonstrations will include: the throwing and shaping of vertical forms, bowl forms and flat plate forms; the making of spouted and lidded forms, larger throwing and two and multi piece throwing.
Decoration demonstrations will include: impressing, incising, sgraffito, slip application and resist, glazing and over glazing, painting processes. All work will be fired in gas reduction kilns at 1280°.
The practical work of the course will be complemented by three talks: two illustrated talks with visual and making considerations showing contemporary and historical ceramic work and one on firing and stoneware glazes.

Cost: € 1800
The workshop fee includes
the following:
- Tuition (class is 6/7  hours per day with 12 hours studio time)
- Materials and firings
- Lodging in double room; single room on request at extra cost of 280 €
- Welcome dinner and welcome breakfast
- A freshly prepared full Tuscan lunch with wine on all working days
