Type: Hand building. An Advanced Workshop with Naked Raku
Date: May 31 – June 6, 2009
This workshop is intended for people with confidence and experience in raku firing. This workshop will focus on ceramic surface. In order to develop a personal ceramic language students will be introduced to combinations of materials and processes to create a wide range of naked raku surfaces.
Processes involved will include: different textural treatments of the clay surface; mark making, surface pattern and imagery; use of different resist slips; use of sacrificial glaze; post firing surface treatment; raku firing and post firing reduction. Participants will be encouraged to be very involved their own raku firing and post firing processes.
People are welcome to bring their own bisc. fired pieces, more information about amount and dimensions of work etc. will be sent after registration.

Born in Sheffield, England in 1947. Studied at Bretton Hall College. In 1985 elected Chairman of Craft Potters Association. For the past two decades English ceramist David Roberts has devoted himself to the making of large coil built and raku fired vessels. He is one of the first British ceramists to specialise in high quality contemporary raku, the making of which he has helped to popularise as a serious discipline within contemporary British ceramics, in the many exhibitions, workshops and demonstrations he has held throughout the U.K., Europe and the U.S.A. His ceramics are represented in many private and public collections including the National Museum of Scotland, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Museum of Wales and the Ulster Museum.
