23 Coiling and Colour
Instructor: Carolyn Genders
Type: Handbuilding. For all
Date: June 6 – 12 , 2010
On this workshop we will explore the natural relationship between form, surface and colour. Combining these elements is challenging but hugely enjoyable and leads to uniquely personal and individual work.
Encouraged by Carolyn, students will develop ideas for form and surface, drawing inspiration from the beautiful Tuscan landscape before making a group of pieces using Carolyn’s particular method of coiling. Colour and texture will be applied using vitreous slips. Vitreous slip is a versatile medium with which to explore colour. It offers endless possibilities for pattern and textural variation. Half way between a slip and a glaze vitreous slip needs only a single firing.
Throughout the course, Carolyn will demonstrate all the techniques covered. There will be plenty of time for discussion and students work at their own pace. There will be a firing half way through so that the results of tests for colour, pattern and texture can be considered before the completion of the final pieces. This course is for those with some experience of handbuilding who wish to develop more advanced coiling techniques and to explore a great alternative to glazed surfaces.
