18 Coiling and Colour
Carolyn Genders www.carolyngenders.co.uk
April 27th – May 3rd 2014

Handbuilding. Beginners and Advanced

On this workshop we will explore the use of colour, texture and pattern to create exciting ceramic surfaces on beautiful coiled forms and vessels. Exploring the natural relationship between form, surface and colour, is challenging but hugely enjoyable and leads to uniquely personal and individual work.

Encouraged by Carolyn, students will develop design ideas, drawing inspiration from the Tuscan landscape, particularly beautiful at this time of year when it is still lush and green, before making a group of pieces learning Carolyn’s particular method of coiling.

These coiled pieces will be the three- dimensional canvases on which to try out a variety of decorative and painterly techniques and different ways to apply coloured vitreous slips.

Vitreous slip is a versatile medium with which to use colour on ceramics. It offers endless possibilities for pattern and textural variation. Half way between a slip and a glaze, vitreous slip needs only a single firing to produce a matt or semi matt surface.

As everyone works at their own pace, this is a course that suits both the more advanced and beginners. Beginners learn the basic techniques of coiling and will have time to try all the different techniques of both making and slip decoration whilst the more advanced student has the chance to hone and refine their making techniques and explore fully the many ways of using vitreous slips to create textural and painterly surfaces with real depth.

There will be a firing half way through so that the results of tests for colour, pattern and texture can be considered before the completion of final pieces.

Cost € 960
