Throwing and handbuilding. For all

What could be more inspiring than the opportunity to spend two weeks focused on pots in the beautiful Italian countryside? Your biggest and only concern in this throwing and handbuilding workshop will be making pots that speak about your personal creative vision. Through a number of thought provoking exercises, trips to markets, conversations on interpreting architectural or natural forms and demonstrations of advanced techniques, you will have the opportunity to develop those ideas that you have been promising yourself you would get to "if only I had the time".

Whether you are a hand builder or you like to work on the wheel, this is the opportunity for you to take your work to the next level. I will offer my assistance with your work through demonstrations of the wide variety of techniques I use in my own work, and lots of one on one. There will be plenty of time for focused, thoughtful work, and discussion about the finished pieces. The quiet beauty of the Italian countryside, laughter, new friendships and two weeks of glorious time to "play" and explore will take you and your work to new heights.

Once we are finished with making, all of the work will be fired in gas kilns while we are off enjoying more of the countryside and visiting local potter's studios and the beautiful, historic towns in the region. And let's not forget the wines of Chianti. See you there!

Cost: 2000

La MeridianaCarol-Ann Michaelson has been a potter for over thirty years and during that time she has been invited to work and teach across North America, in Europe, China and Japan. Her work graces fine homes, galleries and museums around the world. She has had the honour of winning numerous awards and scholarships. "I make the work that engages me, first of all the work I love, whether it be functional or one of a kind pieces. I love pots that have a strong form and a movement to them."
Textural surfaces are developed through the use of a variety of applied glazes and slips as well as stretched textures that are applied on the wet clay. The work is fired in both gas or wood kilns. "I want to make pots that people will both enjoy living with and when functional, using in their daily lives. In these busy times, a handmade pot can give the user a quiet moment of reflection and a connection to our humanity".
