22 Raku and its colours
May 24th – 30th 2015
Ute Grossmann www.ute-grossmann.de
Handbuilding, decoration. Non beginners.

Design and surfaces decoration is the focus in this workshop.
Each participant will be able to build one or more simple forms, but will also be invited to bring bisqued pieces, in order to have sufficient material to experiment the surface techniques.
Ute will show how she builds her asymmetrical, playful vessels and explain how she uses the rules of graphic and painting design as her preferred approach to define the decoration on her pots.
She will demonstrate her use and processing of engobes, wax, dry clay, glazes, and multiple firings. The final surface is often the result of 4 or 5 successive firings, adding glaze or other elements like englobe, stamps or decals after each firing until the result is defined according to her vision. Only the final firing will be a Raku firing, to enhance the textural lines.
During the course we will fire several times, so to give participants the chance to experience and understand the technique. Rather than producing many pots, the emphasis will be on working in depth, defining rich, artistic surfaces through multiple interventions. There will be availability of a vivacious color palette.
The technique may be applied on vessels, on abstract or sculptural forms, on elements for jewellery. During the demos and teaching time, a translator will be available.

Cost: € 960
The workshop fee includes the following:
Tuition (class is 6- 8 hours per day with 12 hours studio time)
All materials and firings
Lodging in double room; single room on request, add € 140
Welcome dinner and welcome breakfast
A freshly prepared full Tuscan lunch with wine on all working days

Ute Grossmann was born in Dresden, Germany in 1960. Having originally studied Chemical Engineering, she gravitated towards the arts with studies in painting and graphics at the  Academy of Fine Arts, Dresden in 1998/1999. She became a member of the Association of Artists as a freelance ceramicist in 2003 and has since developed a considerable portfolio of ceramic vessels and sculptural objects. Her early work also involved doing mosaic sculptures in public places. All her ceramic art still displays mosaic aspects, but are now also mixed with raku, which has become a more prominent feature over the last years.
Recently she has also introduced porcelain clay with finely structured graphic surfaces.
