40 Handbuilding Towards Wood Firing
Ruri ruriclaywork.us
October 4th – 17th 2015

Handbuilding,woodfiring For all.

This workshop is focused on hand-building, using coiling, pinching, and soft slab technique to create clay sculpture and vessels that will be fired in the wood firing kiln and is open to all levels. Ruri will demo her techniques for making and surface finishing. She will encourage participants to listen to their heart and be observant of Nature, taking sketches and keeping notes. Using the observations that come to our attention and collecting materials which may give interesting textures we will create unique clay work.
The final firing in Bagnano Express (La Meridiana’s wood firing kiln) will be an memorable experience. Intermingled with the clay work we will take filed trips to explore the beauty of Tuscany.

Detailed programme

Cost: € 2000
Spouses are welcome and do receive a discounted price of € 1400

La MeridianaRuri has been working in her clay studio in Sheridan, Oregon, USA, for the past 34 year, after coming back from Mashiko, Japan, where she worked as an apprentice under Tatsuzo Shimaoka, National Living Treasure. Her work has been constantly evolving. She modified her anagama in 2014 (wood fired kiln, named FuuKooGama), and has been focusing on abstract clay sculpture fired in her kiln with yakishime yohen (unglazed natural firing effects). She gets inspiration from Nature, and all kinds of relationships to express her spirituality and sceneries from her inner state. ruriclaywork.us
