32 Throwing Stoneware
John Colbeck
August 9th - 22nd 2015

Throwing. For all

People throw, and always have, for a variety of reasons. Some focus on form and its surface; some concentrate on objects of function; others use three dimensional objects as a support for graphic ideas - and these three interests often merge. The central focus of this course is throwing but a related focus is the range of ways objects may be finished. Our aim is that, within the framework of the course, the distinct needs of different levels of experience, and of different interests, will be met through individual and group teaching.
Each working day will commence with demonstrations to the group.
Participants may then work in relation to those demonstrations or may pursue their particular interests, in both cases with the attention and support of the teacher. A sequence of throwing demonstrations will show the making of vertical, ovoid, open, flat, spouted, altered and lidded forms and will proceed to larger and to two and multi piece throwing. Demonstrations of surface and mark-making processes will include glazing and double glazing, slip application, resist processes, impressing, incising and sprigging. Work will be fired in gas reduction kilns at 1280C.
The practical work of the course will be complemented by technical talks about glaze and firing and by illustrated talks about the inter-relationships between process and visual quality.

Cost: € 1800
The workshop fee includes
the following:
- Tuition (class is 6/8  hours per day with 12 hours studio time)
- All materials and firings
- Lodging in double room; single room on request at extra cost of 280 €
- Welcome dinner and welcome breakfast
- A freshly prepared full Tuscan lunch with wine on all working days
