19 Organic Forms in Clay, using Nature as Inspiration
Jinny Hargrave
April 26th – May 9th 2015

Handbuilding. For all

Tap into your creativity exploring the wonderful world of nature, interpreting natural forms as a source of inspiration in clay work. This could include shells, rocks, flowers and plants, seedpods, vegetables, trees, and more that we can find in abundance in the surroundings of La Meridiana.
The class will focus mostly on hand building; however, throwing or a combination of both can be utilized to obtain the desired expression. We will give a preference to abstraction as opposed to a literal focus. Various surface treatments and textures will be explored: resist techniques, carving and incising, using underglazes, layering, and more. We will use stoneware clay, fired at mid-range temperature, around c/5. We will also be able to do some exciting raku firing! This will lend itself very well to the organic forms. As part of the program we will take side trips to the Tuscan country side and art towns.

Programme

Cost: 2100 €
The workshop fee includes the following:
- Tuition (class is 6/7  hours per day with 12 hours studio time)
- Materials and firings
- Lodging in double room; single room on request at extra cost of 280 €
- Welcome dinner and welcome breakfast
- A freshly prepared full Tuscan lunch with wine on all working days
- Field trips and gourmet tastings

La MeridianaJinny Hargrave has been a clay artist since 1965 and has taught pottery classes at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, North Carolina for many years, and at Carolina Clay Connection, a pottery supply/studio, which she founded in 1995. Prior to that, she was a full time professional clay artist and a graphic designer with work in galleries and collections locally and abroad.
Having grown up in the forests of western Pennsylvania, Jinny was surrounded by natural forms and plant life. She now lives in Charlotte, North Carolina and spends time at the beaches, where she observes marine life and shell forms which she carries over into her clay expression.
