25 The Potter’s Wheel in the 21st Century
Throwing. Intermediate and advanced
Jeff Oestreich - www.oestreichpottery.com
June 14th – 27th 2015

Treat yourself to an ideal backdrop for making pots with attitude: The splendid landscape of Tuscany, fabulous food on handmade plates and a studio equipped with a soda kiln. When pots intersect with food the marriage couldn't be better. This will be a two weeks intensives of making pots on the potter's wheel with an abundance of instruction on a host of altering techniques to include faceting, fluting, scalloping, darting and cut and reassemble. We'll do a series of exercises designed to expand our thinking and further our quest for pots that reflect our personal journey in clay. Our soda kiln fired in an oxidation atmosphere allows for a range of colors that are unique with surfaces that are alive and personal. We will talk about the importance of glaze choice that is suitable to soda firing and study the technical aspects. Our overriding concern will be paying close attention to detail. Daily demonstrations and either group or individual critiques will take place throughout the workshop and the European model of studios being closed in the evenings and on Sundays allow time for impromptu discussions on a variety of topics from how one generates ideas to how to maintain a healthy relationship with clay over a lifetime. And of course there are many site seeing opportunities.

Detailed programme

La MeridianaJeff Oestreich fell in love with clay while studying art in the middle 1960's at Bemidji State University in northern Minnesota. He later transferred to the University of Minnesota to study under Warren MacKenzie. Upon graduation in 1969 he moved to St. Ives England to apprentice at the Leach Pottery. His latest inspiration comes from Art Deco detail which he discovered on a trip to New Zealand in 1992. He is about to embark on a trip to St. Ives for a residency at the Leach Pottery after a 45 year absence. He will work on the same wheel in the same corner of the pottery which is now a museum. Jeff has taught and exhibited in New Zealand, South Africa, Germany, England and Australia. www.oestreichpottery.com
