27 Sign and Colour I
Creating ceramic surfaces using vitreous slips.
Carolyn Genders www.carolyngenders.co.uk
July 2nd – 8th 2017

Surface decoration. Beginner and intermediate

We will explore the use of colour, texture and pattern to create exciting ceramic surfaces. Exploring the natural relationship between surface and colour is challenging but hugely enjoyable and leads to uniquely personal and individual work. Encouraged by Carolyn, students will develop design ideas, drawing inspiration from the Tuscan landscape, before making a group of press moulded bowls and tiles. These pieces will be the two- and three-dimensional canvases on which to try out different ways to apply the brightly coloured vitreous slips.
Vitreous slip is a versatile medium with which to use colour on ceramics. It offers endless possibilities for pattern and textural variation. Half way between a slip and a glaze, vitreous slip needs only a single firing to produce a matt or semi matt surface.
As everyone works at their own pace, this is a course that suits both the beginners and the more advanced. Beginners will learn techniques of slip decoration and have time to try them out on the pieces that they make during the week. The more advanced will explore fully the many ways of using vitreous slips to create textural and painterly surfaces that have real depth.
There will be a firing half way through so that the results of tests for colour, pattern and texture can be considered before the completion of the final pieces. At the opening the kiln for the final time on Saturday morning, there will be a brief resume to look at and discuss the results.
Sign and Colour II is the perfect progression from this course, adding more in depth knowledge of vitreous slips and new print techniques on ceramics.

The total cost of the course is € 1080, Single price supplement: € 150.
Discounted price of € 1900 for those who will attend course I and II.
