July 12th – 22nd 2015

Handbuilding. Designed for Art Teachers

Inquire with your school board for availability of CEU credits
This 12-day hands-on workshop is specifically designed for Art Teachers. The program will teach participants how to create Sculptural Wall Murals for students of all ages. Tile work has been an art form for thousands of years. It is a diverse form of clay work that can be adapted to any ceramics studio and for student body from kindergarten thru high school. The focus is to teach students and teachers several ways to create dimensional, textural and sculptural murals for their classroom projects.

1. Teachers will learn new techniques that will inspire their own creative process and their student body.
2. The history of tile making is a long and diverse one. Teachers can bring history and art into the classroom, while using the tile format as a vehicle to teach both subjects.
3. Teachers can bridge disciplines, bringing for example, history into the tile-making project by creating historical murals of a locality, which can be incorporated into local public art.
3. Tile projects can be adapted to students of all ages, from early education to high school age students.
4. Little, if any equipment is needed for tile projects, so they can be implemented in almost any school setting.
5. Teachers will learn a new, simple and diverse approach to glazing that will open a range of surface/glazing possibilities. This is especially helpful for teachers who do not have a strong ceramics and chemistry background. Instead of complicated glaze formulas, all my tile surfaces are treated with ceramic slips, stain, engobes and underglazes.

During a 12-day workshop, there will be 5 studio working days, one bisque firing day, 2 glaze days and 1 final firing day. Studio days will be filled with techniques offered and ample time for participants to explore those techniques. During the firing days we will dedicate time for field trips to the surrounding art towns and beauty spots of Tuscany. A final ‘collective’ project can be designed where all participants add to a small sculptural wall mural that is left for La Meridiana. This project will be a hands on experience of what issues they may run into creating a public art project like this and how to resolve those issues.
