Porcelain/Carbontrap Shino Glazes, Throwing Intermediate/Advanced

“I first came to La Meridiana for a workshop in 2008 with my dear friend and mentor Malcolm Davis. Malcolm loved this place and the opportunity to share his porcelain throwing techniques and beautiful, temperamental glaze with students in the glorious hills of Tuscany. I will endeavor to do his legacy justice by demonstrating many of the techniques he passed along to me and many more gleaned through years of trial, error and a bit of luck.”

Shino has many faces. It can be soft, subtle, earthy, fat, crawling, shiny and exploding with color. This workshop will focus on the latter two, learning how to achieve spectacular results using Malcolm Davis Carbontrap Shino.

The day will start with one of “Malcolm's Meditations” followed by a morning demo and suggestions for small projects to use for glazing. In the afternoon, Sharon Warrington will provide one on one instruction and assistance. She will pass along many tricks and techniques for working with porcelain and reclaiming slop and trimmings in a primarily stoneware studio. Firing schedules, glaze recipes, wax decoration, glazing techniques and drying tips will be discussed.

We will be using a very white, plastic European Porcelain for making and several of Malcolm's favorite shinos for glazing. The primary focus will be on achieving Malcolm's spectacular carbon spots and wax brushwork. Each working day there are two coffee/tea breaks and Lucia's incredible three-course lunch with plenty of wine! We will also enjoy a few day trips, wine tastings and a pizza night. Although our days will be full, we will take time to reminisce and share tales of our own journeys with clay and Shino and of course, Malcolm, the one and only “Shino Warrior”.

The total cost of the course is 2100 Euro; Single price supplement: 280 Euros.
Spouses are welcome. They are entitled to everything offered by La Meridiana as in the agreement except what pertains workshop and ceramic activities. The cost for a non- clay participant is 1470Euro.

All materials and firings
Lodging in double room; single room on request, add 280 €

La MeridianaSharon Warrington is originally from the Chicago area. She attended high school and college in south Florida graduating with a BFA in Ceramics from Barry University, in Miami Shores, in 1975. After taking time off to raise 2 great kids, she returned to clay in 1995 at Lone Star College in Houston, Texas, where she is currently a studio assistant for Roy Hanscom.
Sharon attended her first Malcolm Davis workshop in 2004. Over the years she took every chance she could get to pick his brain about the triumphs and tragedies of carbon-trap shino, from glaze recipes to drying techniques to firing schedules. He was always there to lend advice, support and of course humor. Having been fortunate enough to attend two workshops with Malcolm at La Meridiana, Sharon, now an award winning carbon-trap artist in her own right, is thrilled to have the opportunity to return to this wondrous place and share a bit of the 'Shino Warrior's' remarkable legacy.
