25 Terra Sig and Soft Raku
A modern interpretation of an antique technique
Rosana Antonelli http://rosanantonelli.blogspot.it/
June 17 – 23, 2018

Terra Sig and Raku. For all

Among the most beautiful and unusual ceramic surfaces, with colours ranging from cream to rust, through spectacular oranges, the fascination for Terra sig never fails. Terra sig ( from Terra sigillata = sealed earth) is an antique technique reaching back to the Romans, used to seal low fired vases. It produces a semi matt finish with an array of earthy and orange tones and a soft feel.
In this course, Rosana Antonelli will teach Terra sig in a contemporary interpretation. We will start the five days of workshop by making vases or flat objects with slabs or on the wheel and then study various finishing methods and the theoretical and practical knowledge for the preparation of Terra sig. The last days will be dedicated to the firings. We will learn how to obtain deep blacks and beautiful craquelé through the technique of Soft Raku, a way to enhance further the beauty of the Terra sig finishing technique. Variation of the effects will be obtained by moistening the surface with sponges or brushes and by using resist techniques. During the firing, each time a transformation will take place before our eyes, in an endless game of fresh and interesting results.

The total cost of the course is 1080 euros; Single price supplement: 150 Euros.
The workshop fee includes the following
Tuition

Lodging in double room; single room on request, add 150 euros
