Understand the peculiar qualities of porcelain in order to throw successfully on the wheel, adding hand built sections.
Antoinette Badenhorst www.porcelainbyantoinette.com
April 8th – 21st  2018
Throwing and decoration. Intermediate and advanced

The objective of this porcelain workshop for students is to get and understanding of the medium porcelain. It has different requirements than other clay bodies and when understanding these, it will become easier to use it and to create incredibly fine and intricate objects with it. The answer to solve problems with porcelain lies in its history and character. Other than porcelain that was naturally found in ancient China, Western porcelain is manmade. With it came characteristics that need specific understanding in order to be successful as a porcelain artist.
During the workshop we will work simultaneously on 3- 5 objects; a combination of hand building and wheel throwing techniques. In that way students will learn to control the drying phases of the porcelain. They will also learn to work with porcelain beyond the wheel, because Antoinette will show and use all possible techniques during the altering process.
Students will be allowed to practice on more pieces on the wheel or by hand building, but Antoinette will control the quality to make sure that just the best five pieces get fired.
She would like to encourage students to bring samples or images of their work so that she can understand their needs from the beginning.
This class is suitable for intermediate to advanced students.
